An important component of the Project was the identification and documentation of examples of good practice in internationalisation strategies of universities. A Case Study approach was used with members of the Project team visiting eleven universities to undertake field work to document good practice.
As with the Stocktake, the Case Studies covered six Program Strategies:
International Student Program
Internationalisation of Teaching
through the curriculum
through links and exchange programs
Offshore and Distance Education
International Technical Assistance and Training
Internationalisation in Research
International Student and Community Support Services
plus the overall
Organisation Strategy of the University in respect of Internationalisation.
Case Studies were selected as a comprehensive set, representative of old and new universities, in metropolitan and regional centres, and in a number of different States and the Australian Capital Territory.
For each of the program strategies, a university was selected as an example of good practice. (In the case of the Internationalisation of Research two universities were selected, ANU as a university founded solely as a research institution and the University of Adelaide as a typical state teaching and research university.)
In respect of the program strategy Internationalisation of Teaching, Monash University was selected as the Case Study site. In addition, a specific initiative at Macquarie University was selected for a briefer, supplementary case study. The Macquarie University example is not of a strategy but rather an innovative, international teaching activity using the Internet.
Table 6 lists the Strategies and the Universities selected.

Two universities were selected for the organisation strategy, one illustrating a generally centralist approach (Wollongong), and the other a more devolved, faculty-based approach (Curtin).
Each of the universities selected for Case Studies was invited to forward documentation to the Project Team.
The Project Team then visited each of the Case Study sites, for discussions at Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor or Pro Vice-Chancellor level, and with Deans, Heads of International Offices, academic staff members and university staff members concerned with internationalisation. Further documentation was received during these visits including annual reports, mission statements, corporate plans and specific program materials.
At each University, the Project Team sought information to identify and define the program or organisation strategy, on the university's strategy to develop good practice, on the university's planning and evaluation to implement this strategy and on the benefits of the strategy. Particular attention was given to the use of new technologies and to quality assurance factors in each strategy.
During the planning of the Case Study visits, agreement was reached between the University and the Project Team on the focus of the study; particular programs were identified to illustrate good practice within the overall program or organisational strategy.
In respect of the program strategy International Student and Community Support Services, members of the Project Team met with international students at a conference in Brisbane of July 1996 of the National Liaison Committee for International Students in Australia.
The Project Team carried out and documented the Case Studies using the framework of a Good Practice Model, documented at Appendix 3.
A Schedule of Case Study Visits is at Appendix 4.
