Student enrolments and completions by Field of Education/Study

Total students

In 2001 a new Field of Education classification was introduced to replace the Field of Study classification for university courses. As there is no simple method of mapping between the two classifications, the introduction of the new classification has made it very difficult to examine changing enrolment patterns between 1993 and 2001. An approximate mapping of enrolments has been developed for this report that maps Fields of Study to Fields of Education, based on the classification of individual continuing students in 2000 and 2001. No mapping has been done on completions as 2001 completion data will not be received until 2002. Further work will be done to develop this mapping for future publications.

Society and Culture was the most popular Field of Education in 1993, very closely followed by Management and Commerce (table A1). In that year these two fields accounted for 40 per cent of all enrolments across all Fields of Education. In 2001 these were still the two most popular Fields of Education, accounting for 48 per cent of all enrolments, but Management and Commerce is now slightly ahead of Society and Culture. The only Field of Education to experience a decrease in enrolments during this period is Education, for which commencing enrolments are down by 2.6 per cent and all enrolments are down by 2.2 per cent. The greatest increase is in Information Technology with commencing enrolments up by 109.3 per cent and all enrolments up by 61.5 per cent.

There was a 29 per cent increase in award course completions between 1993 and 2000, up 38 230 completions. The highest number of completions in both 1993 and 2000 was in Business, Administration and Economics (table A2). This Field of Study accounted for 21 per cent of all completions in 1993 and 30 per cent in 2000. Agriculture, Animal Husbandry; Veterinary Science and Education all recorded declines in the number of completions during this period.

Undergraduate students

Society and Culture was the most popular Field of Education for all undergraduate enrolments in both 1993 and 2001, accounting for 21 per cent of all undergraduate enrolments in 1993 and 25 per cent in 2001 (table A3). Management and Commerce occupied second place in both years, with 20 per cent of all undergraduate enrolments in 1993 and 24 per cent in 2001. No Field of Education recorded a decline in undergraduate enrolments.

There was a 17 per cent increase in undergraduate award course completions between 1993 and 2000, up by around 17 000 completions. The highest number of completions in 1993 was in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, closely followed by Business, Administration and Economics (table A4). By 2000 these two Fields of Education had swapped positions, with the latter being responsible for 26 per cent of all undergraduate award course completions in 2000. Agriculture, Animal Husbandry; Veterinary Science; Education; and Health recorded declines in the number of completions during this period. The most notable decline was in Education which went from being 14 per cent of undergraduate award course completions in 1993 to 10 per cent in 2000.

Postgraduate coursework students

Education was the most popular Field of Education in 1993, with 23 300 postgraduate coursework enrolments, but by 2001 it had slipped to third place with a 28 per cent decline in enrolments, the only major Field to experience a decline in enrolments (table A5). The most popular Field of Education in 2001 was Management and Commerce, where all postgraduate coursework enrolments have increased by 102 per cent to 43 100 students. Other Fields of Education to experience large increases during this period are Information Technology (commencing enrolments up 151 per cent, all up 103 per cent) and Natural and Physical Sciences (commencements up 121 per cent, all up 88 per cent).

There was a 61 per cent increase in postgraduate coursework completions between 1993 and 2000, up 19 100 completions. The highest number of completions in 1993 was in Education, but by 2000 there had been a 211 per cent increase in postgraduate coursework completions in Business, Administration and Economics, which is now clearly the most popular Field of Study (table A6). This Field of Study accounted for 21 per cent of all completions in 1993 and 41 per cent in 2000. Agriculture, Animal Husbandry; Education and Veterinary Science recorded declines in the number of completions during this period.

Higher degree research students

Society and Culture was the most popular Field of Education in both 1993 and 2001, accounting for 24 per cent of all higher degree research enrolments in 1993 and 26 per cent in 2001. The strongest growth in enrolments was Management and Commerce, which accounted for 5 per cent of all higher degree research enrolments in 1993 and 7.5 per cent in 2001 (table A7). Most Fields of Education recorded substantial increases in higher degree research enrolments during this period, however Engineering and Related Technologies, and Agriculture, Environmental and Related Studies reported only moderate increases in all enrolments and substantial decreases in commencing enrolments.

There was a 69 per cent increase in higher degree research completions between 1993 and 2000, up 2200 completions. The highest number of completions in 1993 was in Science, closely followed by Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (table A8). These two Fields of Study accounted for slightly more than half of all higher degree research completions in both 1993 and 2000, but the strongest growth area was Business, Administration, Economics which experienced a 189 per cent increase in higher degree research completions during this period.
