Diversity in Australian Higher Education Institutions, 1994

INTRODUCTION

Bar

Diversity is an important feature of Australia’s higher education sector. This diversity is demonstrated by differences among Australian higher education institutions over a wide range of characteristics. These characteristics include student numbers, staffing profiles, fields of study offered, funding sources and levels of research activity. The purpose of this publication is to illustrate this diversity by presenting 68 indicators, compiled primarily from data collected in 1994. The indicators have been grouped into four categories - students, staff, resources and research. The diversity of higher education institutions needs to be interpreted in the light of the historical development of the sector and the current policy context. The discussion relating to each category draws attention to the main factors lying behind the diversity that is evident from the relevant indicators.
