INTRODUCTION

In this paper, for the first time, the authors have brought together a number of different sources of quantitative information about the research activity and impact of Australia’s universities.

The six measures used are:

• Australian Postgraduate Awards (APAs);

• weighted Research Quantum (RQ) funding data;

• weighted RQ publications data;

• publications in journals indexed by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI);

• citations in ISI-indexed journals; and

• research expenditure.

For each indicator, the authors show the share of the total associated with each university and the university’s rank. Universities are sorted on the last measure, 1995 Research Expenditure.
