Letter from the Chair of the Review

Dear Reader

I welcome the opportunity on behalf of the Review Team to thank all those who have contributed to the Review, giving generously of your time, experience and expertise. Some of you completed questionnaires or conducted or participated in various studies, others attended consultation meetings or met with us on behalf of your organisations. Many of you spent time on submissions to the Review. For the Review Panel the experience has been rich and challenging. We recognise the trust you have given in helping the Review address nursing education for the future.

We note that Australian nursing education is internationally recognised as being innovative and held in high esteem. However, we do need to plan for the future. Your help and advice have developed the questions we are putting to you in this discussion paper. We have produced this discussion paper to share with you the debate we have heard, the research findings and the ideas from submissions and consultations. We hope you will find time to read at least our summation and questions in Chapter 2 and send us your views on the issues raised. If you have time for a more in-depth examination, the background material and the exhibits explore in more detail the information collected during the course of the Review.

Many of you have already addressed the issues raised in this discussion paper in submissions or consultations. I wish to ensure you that these view have been heard. Nevertheless, we wish to test more broadly the way forward on the issues, and are more than happy for you to simply alert us to the position you took in your submission on a particular issue while responding to other questions in more detail.

I hope you will join us in considering the matters raised in this paper and tell us what you think. We look forward to receiving your ideas which will be taken into consideration in developing our final report and recommendations. This report will be delivered to the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson, MP and the Minister for Health and Ageing, Senator the Hon Kay Patterson, in mid 2002.
