11.4 Appendix IV - Factors In RN Retention - Thematic Group by Institutional Category

Question 51 asked the importance of several factors in registered nurses' decisions to remain in the nursing workforce.

Response options were grouped under the seven categories of (1) work aspects, (2) structural aspects, (3) professional effectiveness, (4) team support, (5) salary/prestige, (6) employer care and (7) legal concerns. The question asked respondents to indicate how important they believed various factors within these categories were to new graduate RN's when they were deciding whether or not to stay in the nursing workforce. Respondents were asked to indicate the importance of these factors using a four point Likert scale:

1 - unimportant

2 - slightly important

3 - moderately important

4 - very important

Category Factors

Work aspects - unpaid overtime, working double shifts, call-backs on days off, 7 day 24 hour on-call, shiftwork generally, performing physical labour, floating to wards/units on demand and finding continual cost efficiencies.

Structural aspects - rotating rosters, job sharing, higher/faster patient turnover, high patient-nurse ratios, recreation leave availability, short work contracts (eg 3-6 months), contract conditions (eg gag-clause), requirement to buy/wear a uniform and gender-sensitive work environment.

Professional effectiveness - influence on provision of quality care, influence on policy development, autonomy in decision-making, being able to select own workload, full skill utilisation.

Team support - good working relationships with nurse managers, good working relationships with doctors/physicians, being valued by other health professionals, good working relationships with other nurses, working in a supportive environment and workplace bullying.

Salary/prestige - salary levels, career development and/or promotion, equality with other professional carers, a permanent position, being treated as a valued health professional, private office facilities, society's media depiction of nurses, community opinion of nursing/nurses and other professional team members' opinions of nursing as a career.

Employer care - commitment to excellent nursing care, childcare available at the workplace, affordable childcare, employer educational support, regular study leave, paid study leave, safe working environment, parking at/close to work, recognition of excellence program and worthwhile work roles for disabled RNs.

Legal concerns - legal responsibility for other carer actions, working within professional limits, responsibility for select non-nursing mistakes, worry about personal legal liability, increased consumer expectations and access to free/subsidised legal advice.
