Nursing Education and Graduates Part 2

3. Results and Discussion

Separate data were collected from educational institutions offering undergraduate and postgraduate nursing education across Australia. For courses offered, data were only collected on courses that were equivalent to six months of full-time study or greater in duration. Surveys were sent to the nominated members of staff at all universities offering undergraduate and/or postgraduate nursing programs and one non-university educational provider offering postgraduate nursing programs. Copies of the undergraduate, and postgraduate surveys can be found in Appendix A. At the undergraduate level, university respondents completed separate surveys for each campus where nursing courses were conducted. Survey data collected related to the number of students enrolled in and completing the relevant courses offered. At the undergraduate level data were separated into the pre-registration or post-registration categories. At the postgraduate level, data were categorised according to nursing workforce specialties using the modified framework of the Ogle et al. (2001) broad-bands of nursing specialty. The results are reported in the following order:

  1. Nursing undergraduate and postgraduate course profiles;
  2. Undergraduate student profiles;
  3. Postgraduate student profiles.

3.1 Nursing Course Profiles

University websites were searched to determine the availability of nursing programs by campus location for each institution. Course profiles were checked via telephone contact with individual universities and later validated as part of the survey process. Courses described in the nursing course profiles according to level of qualification (Certificate, Bachelors degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Masters and Doctorate) are in accordance with AQF (1998).

University campus locations were categorised as metropolitan, regional or rural/remote based on the Rural, Remote and Metropolitan Areas (RRMA) classification system used by Ogle et al. (2001). The classification system used was based primarily on city/town population numbers as follows:

  • Metropolitan – State or Territory capital city;
  • Regional – population > 100,000;
  • Rural – population < 100,000.

3.2 Undergraduate Nursing Education Course Profiles

In order to differentiate students completing undergraduate nursing courses who would be eligible for registration for the first time (pre-registration) from students completing undergraduate nursing courses who were already registered nurses (post-registration), undergraduate nursing programs were categorised as pre-registration or post-registration. Pre-registration programs comprised the following undergraduate nursing courses, noted in full-time years of study:

  • Three-year Bachelor degrees in nursing;

  • Four to five-year combined degrees, which either consisted of a Bachelor degree in Nursing with a Bachelor degree in another field of study such as Psychology, Commerce or Arts, or a Bachelor degree in Nursing with a Bachelor degree in another nursing discipline, such as Midwifery or Rural Health;

  • Two-year Bachelor degrees in Nursing for graduates from another discipline or students with previous nursing studies, such as Division 2 nurses. (These students are usually admitted into the three-year pre-registration Bachelor of Nursing program and are given credit equivalent to one-years full-time study);

  • One-year re-entry programs (Bachelor degree or Certificate in Nursing) for nurses whose registration had lapsed;

  • One-year conversion programs (Bachelor degree or Certificate in Nursing) for overseas-qualified nurses seeking registration in Australia.

Post-registration nursing programs mainly consisted of the following undergraduate courses, noted in full-time years of study:

  • One-year conversion programs for hospital educated registered nurses, seeking to upgrade their qualifications to a Bachelor degree in Nursing;

  • One-year honours programs (undertaking a research thesis) for students who have completed an undergraduate pre-registration Bachelor degree in Nursing. (These students are eligible for registration as a nurse before they commence their honours program).

Table 1 shows the undergraduate pre-registration and post-registration nursing course profiles for 2002 by State, university and campus location, with details of course mode, course length and intakes per year. Internal course modes reflect programs that are conducted on campus only, and external course modes reflect programs conducted off campus only (including distance education programs). Mixed mode programs have a combination of on and off campus elements. Most pre-registration nursing courses are offered in the internal mode. Some institutions allow Division 2 nurses who are upgrading to a pre-registration Bachelor degree to complete the course in mixed mode, and some post-registration undergraduate nursing programs are offered as external or mixed mode courses. Course length is expressed as an equivalence of full-time semesters (FT sem’s) and intakes per year show when students may commence a course of study.
