COMMONWEALTH TO PROVIDE $223,016 FOR VET IN SCHOOLS CENTRES IN THE NORTH EAST OF TASMANIA

K2503 23 April 1999

The Commonwealth Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, the Hon Dr David Kemp, and the Tasmanian Minister for Education, the Hon Paula Wriedt, today announced the approval of Commonwealth funding totalling $223,016 to establish a network of Skill Centres for School Students throughout the North East of Tasmania.

The funds will be provided to the Break O’Day Enterprise Board inc. for the establishment of the North East Education and Training Centre, a multi-purpose Skill Centre for the School Students facility at the Centre for Learning. This will involve the extension and alteration of the existing school principal’s residence at St Helens and information technology equipment for St Marys and Winnaleah District High Schools.

These Skill Centres for School Students are combining a mix of delivery to cater for the needs of students across the region, including on-line delivery and video conferencing.

The provision of these funds through the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) follows agreement by the Commonwealth and State and Territory Ministers responsible for Vocational Education and Training to establish a number of projects for further developing Vocational Education and Training for year 11 and 12 students across Australia.

The total amount of funding available in 1999 for this initiative is in excess of $5 million.

"I am encouraged that so many schools and other providers are embracing the importance of Vocational Education and Training in schools and providing students with a variety of pathways for their future," said Dr Kemp.

The aim of this initiative is to provide additional facilities and create training opportunities for year 11 and 12 school students.

It is intended that these Skill Centres for School Students will ultimately help students in undertaking vocational training through obtaining real work place skills that can help them in the transition from school to work.
