GREATER PROTECTION FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS

Following on from recommendations made in a Senate Committee report last year which included the extension of the sunset clause of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 1991 (ESOS Act) until 2002, the international reputation of Australias $3 billion a year education industry is to receive a further boost with a review of the Act announced today by the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp. In line with the commitment to constantly monitor the effectiveness of legislation and policy, DETYA is to lead a review to reform elements of the ESOS Act. A whole-of-Government approach will guide the reform agenda, which will consider both a range of changes designed to further enhance Australias reputation as a provider of high quality education and training. "I am keen to build on the effectiveness of the regulatory framework. Following a commitment to consult at the time the ESOS Acts sunset clause was extended, my Department has been working up options for improvements. I want to involve the industry closely in the development of an even more effective framework," said Dr Kemp. DETYA is soon to embark on a series of consultations with industry peak bodies, other Commonwealth departments, State and Territory agencies, and the student body representing overseas students in Australia. "Overseas students are of considerable importance to Australia and this government is showing its commitment to them through this initiative. The industry is of significant financial benefit to Australia, and the students presence here contributes to the development of relationships and cultural exchange with the region," said Dr Kemp.
