STREET KIDS PRODUCE HIP RANGE OF SPEAKOUT STREETWEAR WITH HELP OF COMMONWEALTH
K6908 19 August 1999
One of Australias hottest streetwear labels, Speakout, was launched today in Original Levis Stores throughout Australia by Dr David Kemp, Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs. "Speakout is a remarkable success story. All of their products have been designed, produced, packaged and marketed by young people who have overcome personal setbacks or difficult situations in their lives." Dr Kemp said. "These young people may have been street kids, homeless or long-term unemployed who took up the chance to get nationally accredited training certificates in office work, screen printing or garment production at Speakout." Speakout, a Sydney-based company operating in Marrickville, provides real training and employment opportunities for young people who may otherwise be at risk. The company started out in 1996 as a joint venture between the Commonwealth Government, The Body Shop and the Australian Youth Foundation. "Speakout is not simply a business. It is an example of the positive cooperation that can be achieved when government, community and the corporate sectors work together to provide assistance to young people who want help to get skills to get a job," said Dr Kemp. "The success of the label as a commercial product is evident in the decision made by the Original Levis Stores to stock the clothing in their high profile retail environment. I congratulate the Original Levi Stores in joining the growing number of companies in Australia who have taken a stake in the future of our young people." "Companies are gradually becoming more concerned with not just the bottom line. They want to make sure that their business decisions are ethical, economically sound and environmentally friendly. They want to give something back to the community from which they derive their livelihood. "This is an example of the social coalition working within our community."
