Media ReleaseNSW SCHOOLS RECEIVE NATIONAL AWARDS
K7008 23 August 1999
The announcement today of the NSW winners of the National Literacy Week Awards for Literacy and Numeracy Achievement previews the national ceremony on September 7 when all the Major Award winners will be announced, Dr David Kemp, the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, said today. The Commonwealth is providing a total of 70 awards for primary schools across Australia. Ten Commonwealth funded major awards valued at $10,000 each and 60 awards of $1,000 each, will recognise and reward schools that have added significantly to students literacy and numeracy performance. "I congratulate the 16 NSW government and non-government schools announced in the NSW section of the awards. They have all shown commendable achievements in literacy and numeracy, delivering excellent outcomes for their students," said Dr Kemp. "Perhaps most impressive is that the 16 schools cater for a great diversity of students from different social, cultural and language backgrounds. Located in different areas from the inner city to country towns they have all matched their literacy and numeracy programmes with the needs and the characteristics of their students to achieve outstanding results," said Dr Kemp. Of the 16 NSW schools, one receives a major Commonwealth funded award of $10,000. The Commonwealth award winning school for New South Wales is Belmore South Public School, Belmore.
