Media ReleaseRECORD HIGH IN NEW APPRENTICESHIP NUMBERS
K7408 30 August 1999
The latest statistics on New Apprenticeships figures supplied by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) show that as at the end of March 1999, there were 232,000 New Apprentices in training. "That is 232,000 real jobs for young Australians," said the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp. "Growth has been particularly strong for people aged 15-19 with commencements up 17% on the same period last year. "The Howard Government has reversed Labors disgraceful track record in vocational education and training and has provided real opportunities for young people to move smoothly from school into work," said Dr Kemp. Australias vocational education and training system has the confidence of the business community. The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) which represents 350,000 businesses nation wide, including the top 100 companies, has publicly recognised this fact. ACCI recently published a letter expressing strong support for the National Training Framework, which incorporates the Government reforms in this area . Mark Paterson, Chief Executive of ACCI, said that "the new National Training Framework represents a major step forward for this country in giving business access to quality training." The Howard Government has in place a range of school-to-work programmes that are providing encouragement, support and the necessary training and education that are demonstrably helping young people into work," said Dr Kemp. "Nearly 62,000 young people will be assisted through the Howard Governments Jobs Pathway Program (JPP) while Jobs Placement Employment and Training (JPET) will assist some 13,700 young people at risk of unemployment," said Dr Kemp. "The outstanding numbers announced today demonstrate the success of the New Apprenticeship programme once again show that Howard Government policies in the area of vocational education and training are working. "Youth unemployment is falling and we currently have the lowest ever youth unemployment numbers on record since statistics have been collected. "This Government is committed to providing a world class training system we have the support of business for our reforms and now we have 232,000 Australians giving a vote of confidence for our reformed apprenticeship system." The total number in training grew by more than 12,000 (5.5%), to almost 232,000 from 31 December 1998 to 31 March 1999. As a result of the rapid growth experienced in the quarter, the NCVER has revised upwards its estimate for numbers in training at the end of 1998 from the 206,370 previously published to 219,810.
