Media ReleaseCAREERS ON-LINE STUDY TO START
K6107 7 July 1999
Australian job-seekers could soon have access to a unique national on-line career information system, the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs Dr David Kemp announced today. Australian companies Pretzel Logic Pty Ltd, Miles Morgan Pty Ltd and Market Equity Pty Ltd have won the tender for a scoping study for the development of a new national on-line career information system. The consortium, who won the tender from among a field of 16 others, will report on the content, structure, technology and resources needed for the new interactive system. In announcing the successful tender, Dr Kemp said that the Government was keen to develop new ways of delivering high-quality career, occupational and labour market information to help people make the right decisions about training and job-preparation. "Young people entering the workforce, people coming back to work or those wanting to make a career change need a range of information to help them make realistic choices. "Better use of technologies will improve the delivery of this information. The Internet has great potential to give people a better understanding of their career options by linking accurate and reliable information about job requirements, training and vocational education." Dr Kemp said having this information available on-line, as well as through conventional publications, would make it more widely available. "Through computers in schools, libraries, at home and through Government outlets such as Centrelink, people will be able to quickly find the information they need to plan for their careers," said Dr Kemp. The successful consortium led by Pretzel Logic Pty Ltd, a Perthbased Internet and multimedia consulting company, includes vocational education and labour market specialist Miles Morgan Pty Ltd and business information consultants Market Equity Pty Ltd. The consortium will consult with relevant industry sectors and analyse leading-edge research on user needs in preparing its recommendations for a suitable on-line system before delivering its report to the Government in August 1999.
