"LIVE" PICTURES FROM OUTER SPACE ON INTERNET

K5406 25 June 1999

The first live images from outer space via the twin telescope known as the "Gemini Project" will be available through a live download feed onto the internet from 5 a.m. Hawaii time (11a.m. EST) during a Dedication Ceremony in Hawaii today.

"Australian astronomy is leading the world through their participation and support of this cutting edge research into outer space," said the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp.

The $17.9 million Gemini Twin Telescopes Project was funded by the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs through the Australian Research Council (ARC).

The Dedication Ceremony will be attended by Gemini Partners from all over the world, including His Royal Highness, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, American Vice President, Al Gore and Australian Research Council Chair, Professor Vicki Sara.

"This joint project will open new windows into the universe – and through new discoveries, bring us closer to understanding the origins of the stars, galaxies, the universe itself and our place within it," said Dr Kemp.

"This Gemini Project will help strengthen collaborative links between organisations, researchers and the countries participating in this visionary project. Working together, we can access, utilise, develop and grow in our knowledge.

"Australia is proud to join the other nations involved in the project. It is a wonderful and unique opportunity for Australian researchers to continue to be at the cutting edge of research. It is also an opportunity to offer the best training possible to a new generation of astronomers thus ensuring the future of Australia's astronomical endeavours.

"Australia has an outstanding astronomical tradition based on excellence in research – but we are a small country. To maintain our reputation for world class research we need to be part of major international collaborations such as Gemini and the flow-on activities they often generate."
