Media ReleaseAPPRENTICE NUMBERS CONTINUE TO GROW17 January 1999 "Apprentices and trainees are major contributors to the skills of the Australian workforce with almost 123,000 apprentice and trainee commencements during 1998. This is an increase of almost 31% on the previous year," the Federal Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs Dr David Kemp announced today. Figures issued today by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) have shown strong growth in the number of people undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship with an employer. The number of apprentices and trainees rose by over 11% during 1997/98 and reached an estimated 195,500 at 30 June 1998. Since 1996 the number of apprentices and trainees has increased overall by 37,500. The private sector continues to account for the majority of the apprentices and trainees of training, with almost 80% employed in the private sector. The Governments New Apprenticeship initiative was introduced on 1 January 1998. "The figures released today indicate that New Apprenticeships have been well received by both employers and employees and the traditional profile of apprentices and trainees is changing," said Dr Kemp. While males continue to dominate apprenticeships and traineeships, the proportion of females undertaking this type of training continues to increase. Over 39% of those commencing an apprenticeship or traineeship were female and they now represent over 25% of all people undertaking a contract of training. Trades and related workers continue to be the largest occupational group for apprentices and trainees comprising 63.8% of the total in training at 30 June 1998 and 33.3% of the commencements during 1997/98.
