AUSTRALIA OUT TO BOOST US STUDENT NUMBERS

K1302 25 February 1999

Young American students will have an opportunity to study in Australia through a new scholarships programme announced in Washington today by the Minister for Education Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp.

Announcing The Federation Scholarships, Dr Kemp said the initiative is designed to attract US postgraduate students to study at Australian universities.

"An earlier generation of young Americans knew Australia well as many were stationed in Australia during World War II. In more recent times, however, most young Americans develop their perception of Australia through movies and advertisements," said Dr Kemp.

"International education plays an important role in shaping cultural, social and economic relations between countries. The chance to study in Australia provides an opportunity to the present generation of young Americans to gain a greater understanding of our country."

The Australian Education Office (AEO), based in Washington, will launch a new campaign alerting graduating US students to the unique post-graduate education opportunities offered by Australian universities. A poster campaign aimed at final year undergraduates will target North American universities and colleges.

As a part of this awareness campaign the AEO will administer the new Federation Scholarships programme. Twenty-five Australian universities have provided over sixty scholarships - some including a living allowance - for US students to pursue one or two years of study in Australia.

"I believe that this initiative will enable young Americans to see that beyond the stereotypical postcard images of beaches and kangaroos there is an Australia rich in learning and culture," said Dr Kemp.

"On behalf of the Australian Government and Australian people I take this opportunity to issue a warm invitation to young Americans to come and spend some time studying in Australia.

"The Australian Government fully supports this campaign and I am delighted to launch the new scholarship programme today."

Dr Kemp is in Washington attending the major OECD Youth Conference, Preparing Youth for the 21st Century: Policy Lessons from the Past Two Decades.
