Media ReleaseKEMP CONGRATULATES TOP TEACHERS K2203 21 March 1999 Australias best primary and secondary school teachers have been praised for their contribution to building a better society by the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp in Melbourne today. Dr Kemp was speaking at the annual National Excellence in Teaching Awards at which 30 teachers from government and non-government schools were recognised for their excellent teaching skills. Dr Kemp said he was pleased to take part in a ceremony which recognises good teaching in Australias schools. All the winners received a crystal apple trophy while four received awards of $5,000 to be used towards professional development. "In the information age it is more important than ever that our teachers provide the youth of Australia with an education that will equip them with skills to respond to and benefit from our developing, high technology, information rich, global environment. "As a nation we owe a great deal to the commitment and expertise of our teachers. Too often we hear of teachers shortcomings rather than their successes," said Dr Kemp. The teachers receiving awards were nominated by parents, and in secondary schools, by parents and students. "These awards acknowledge the esteem parents and students have for good teachers. "We need to continue supporting teachers in working and engaging with parents and their local communities. "Recently there have been encouraging reports of high levels of parental support for their childrens schools and for their teachers. Recent research has also indicated the potential value of family literacy initiatives. When the goals and practices of parents are in line with those of the school, problems seem to be reduced and achievement is optimised," said Dr Kemp. Dr Kemp said the Government is assisting teachers to attain professional excellence by supporting quality teaching. "During the recent election, the Government announced a quality teacher programme with funding of $75 million over three years. This programme is intended to update and improve teachers skills and to help lift the status of teaching."
