GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES GRADUATE RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN

K2403 22 March 1999

The Federal Government is seeking around 400 graduates to work in public policy development and programme administration, the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Public Service, Dr David Kemp, announced today.

There are opportunities for graduates in a wide range of disciplines. Graduates with qualifications in accounting, business, commerce, computing, economics and finance are particularly welcome to apply.

Newspaper advertisements giving details of the recruitment campaign, "Your Career – Australia’s Future", appeared in the national press on 20 March 1999.

The graduate recruitment campaign is the largest of its kind in the country. It is managed by Recruitment Services Australia (RSA) on behalf of more than 40 Commonwealth and State Government agencies.

Dr Kemp said Australia needed the right people to develop the dynamic, flexible and high-performing public service that is vital for good government and for the Australian community.

"If you are already a graduate or will be completing study this year and you want to contribute to the many important tasks of government, we would welcome your application," said Dr Kemp.

"Our country needs quality public services for its economic, social and cultural wellbeing."

Graduates recruited could train to be trade negotiators, work on the preservation of Australia’s national heritage, develop and manage major service contracts, join the diplomatic service, train as policy developers or "corporate watchdogs" or become intelligence analysts with ASIO and ASIS, among many other important roles.

Dr Kemp said quality graduates from a wide range of disciplines are sought. Australia’s public service agencies are particularly interested in people with qualifications in accountancy, business, commerce, computing, economics, finance, law, human resource management, information science, international relations, regional languages, science and strategic studies.

Graduates can get more information on how to apply by ringing 13 1958 between 20 March and 26 March 1999.
