Media ReleaseFURTHER FEDERAL FUNDING FOR COOPERATIVE MULTIMEDIA CENTRESJuly 3, 1998 K53/98 The Federal Government has allocated up to $33 million over the next four years for the six Cooperative Multimedia Centres it established nearly three years ago, the Minister for Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp, announced today. Dr Kemp said the continued funding followed a review of the CMCs recently completed by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. This will bring the total funding for the Governments CMC programme to more than $57 million for the 1996-2002 period. He said the review showed evidence of the CMCs working collaboratively with multimedia producers. The review also reported wide support for continued funding from within the multimedia industry, and the arts and education sectors. "It is clear from the reviews findings that the CMCs have made a significant contribution to the multimedia industry in the short time they have been up and running," he said. "To take one example, Ngapartji CMC in South Australia has focussed on education and training issues, with more than 13,000 participants attending courses from basic internet use to animation. "Ngapartjis association with Microsoft through the Microsoft Data Centre also has the potential to increase the quality and quantity of Australian content on the internet. "Elsewhere, with activities such as Access CMCs Australian Multimedia Testing Centre in Sydney proving to be a valuable user-friendly performance testing site for Australias multimedia industry, industry support is likely to continue." The consultants found that governance and management practices were critical success factors for all CMCs. In recognition of this, Dr Kemp said tightening management practices would become a condition of the further funding of the CMCs. "The multimedia industry in Australia is growing rapidly and the CMCs have the capacity to stimulate further growth. This continued Commonwealth funding for the CMCs will assist them to become both commercially viable and internationally competitive over the next four years." The six CMCs are Access Australia CMC Pty Ltd of Eveleigh, NSW; EMERGE CMC of South Melbourne, Vic.; Imago CMC of South Perth, WA; Ngapartji CMC of Adelaide, SA; QANTM CMC of Milton, Qld.; and Impart Corporation Pty Ltd of Brisbane, Qld.
