STUDENT MUSICIANS HIT THE STAGE

K4205 7 May 1999

The 1999 Commonwealth Youth Affairs National Battle of the Bands competition was launched today by the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp.

"The Battle of the Bands was developed to encourage and nurture the talents of Australia’s young songwriters and musicians from secondary schools across the nation," said Dr Kemp.

"It’s also about promoting positive perceptions of youth and shows young people that they can enjoy life without the artificial stimulus of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs."

The National Battle of the Bands is run in conjunction with Australia’s youth culture event, the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge, and is supported by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs.

Originating in Australia in 1980, the Battle of the Bands now involves over 400 schools and 40,000 students annually.

"The National Battle of the Bands gives secondary school or college bands across the nation the opportunity to develop and showcase their musical abilities," said Dr Kemp.

Participating students also have the chance to walk away with $1000 in cash and recording time with one of Australia’s leading industry producers.

The executive producer of the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge, Mr Peter Sjoquist, said the competition was a valuable opportunity and a lot of fun for young people interested in music.

"It gives young musicians the chance to develop their unique talents and experience. The competition also reinforces the positive message that you can have fun and succeed without drugs," said Mr Sjoquist.

Entry for schools is free of charge, and each school can enter up to 10 bands. Participants must submit a video entry, consisting of one original song only. Like the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge, the National Battle of the Bands is a 100% Drug Free Experience.

Compositions must be original and the music can be of any style including jazz, acoustic, dance, heavy metal, rock or other. Bands must consist of three to eight members who are current secondary school students.

Regional winners will compete nationally via the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge television specials..

"I am proud that the Commonwealth is involved in this exciting and vibrant display of young Australian talent and I wish all competitors well in this great musical challenge," said Dr Kemp.
