MEDIA COMMENDED FOR POSITIVE YOUTH COVERAGE

The journalists, producers and press photographers who have participated in the inaugural National Youth Media Awards should be congratulated and commended for their contribution in creating a more optimistic future for Australian youth, the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs Dr Kemp, said tonight. "The National Youth Media Awards aim to increase journalists awareness of the powerful impact positive media coverage can make to the lives of young people and how Australian youth see themselves," said Dr Kemp. "Young people and their parents are not asking the media to ignore negative issues, but they do want to see and hear more about the good stories about young people in our community." Dr Kemp was speaking to media representatives and young people at the announcement of the winners of the 1999 National Youth Media Awards at Parliament House, Canberra. "Australia has more than three million young people aged between 12 and 25 and most of them successfully meet the challenges of growing up. They are educated, law abiding and contribute to the community," said Dr Kemp. The National Youth Media Awards are a major new initiative of the Commonwealth Government, developed in response to independent research and representations from young people - that the media was offering limited and negative information about youth. The research conducted by the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs last year, revealed that young people and their parents feel that the media portrays young people as alcoholics/drug abusers, criminals, lazy, complaining, often demanding, dissatisfied, aggressive and in revolt. The National Youth Media Awards acknowledge the powerful role of the media in influencing public opinion and impacting on the way young people see themselves and their ability to participate fully in the community. Dr Kemp said that both the media industry and the general public had enthusiastically embraced the Awards. "With more than 870 entries received this year, the winners have risen above stiff competition by excelling in their reporting of youth achievements or youth issues, and, especially, in giving youth a voice." "The large number of entries indicates that there is positive coverage of youth and youth issues and we hope that these new Awards will encourage more of it!" The National Youth Media Awards are open to print, radio and television journalists and producers, as well as photographers. They include a special category for the Young Journalist of the Year Award, open to those aged under 26, and a Popular Choice Award which encourages the Australian public to nominate positive stories about today's youth. In the 11 categories open to the media 435 entries were received. In the Popular Choice Award category 441 entries were received.
