OFFSHORE CENTRES AWARDED $10 MILLION TO PROMOTE AUSTRALIAN STUDIES
11 May 1999
The Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp, today announced a total of $10 million in funding for two overseas Australian studies centres. As part of the Howard Governments Budget package, the centres, one in London and the other in Washington DC, are to receive endowments of $5 million each to raise levels of interest and excellence in the study of Australia overseas and become self sufficient. Dr Kemp said the endowments will secure funding certainty for the Sir Robert Menzies Centre for Australian Studies, University of London, and the Centre for Australian and New Zealand Studies, Georgetown University, Washington DC. The funding will enable both institutions to expand their activities in teaching courses on Australian studies, postgraduate seminars, public lectures, conferences, research, and academic and student exchanges. "The Menzies and Georgetown University Centres are located in two of the worlds most important capital cities. The centres underline the long standing links and interests we have in both the United Kingdom and the United States. They have great potential to be valuable contributors to public policy debates, government policies and corporate thinking," said Dr Kemp. The study centres aim to inform political, business and community leaders, influential professional groups, school teachers, university academic staff, and students of Australian perspectives on policy matters and opportunities in Australia. They are also intended to highlight key aspects of Australian society such as its creativity, technology skills, diversity and tolerance. "These centres play an important role in the establishment of Australia as a world class contributor to research, the advancement of social policies, and the enhancement of culture and the arts," said Dr Kemp.
