$25 MILLION FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION

11 May 1999

The important link between university and industry has been strengthened following the announcement of $25 million to fund innovative new programs for science teaching, the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp announced today.

The $25 million program ($5 million in 1999-2000, $10 million in 2000-2001 and $10 million in 2001-2002) fulfils the Government’s 1998 election promise for science lectureships.

"The development of graduates with the knowledge and skills to work in the emerging industries and technologies particularly information technology and biotechnology is vital for Australia’s economic growth. Through this initiative, the Government will assist universities and industry to meet these needs," said Dr Kemp.

After consultation with key stakeholders in industry and the science and academic communities, the Government will invite national tenders for collaborative projects involving university course development and lectureships with industry partners.

Funds will be allocated on a competitive basis for large projects for three years.

"A key element of the initiative is that projects involve partnerships between universities and industry, with industry contributing in cash or in kind," said Dr Kemp.

"We need to encourage industry to invest in its own future through investing in education and training. These partnerships will encourage close cooperation between universities and industry in the design and delivery of courses.

"The Government anticipates that the additional funding to develop innovative approaches to course design and delivery will enable universities to attract more school leavers into science courses and will help industry meet their education and training needs."
