$28 MILLION BOOST FOR STUDENT PLACES AT JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY

11 May 1999

"$28 million in additional funding will allow Queensland’s James Cook University to increase access to higher education for students living in the State’s far north. At the same time the funding will also provide 60 places for a new medical school which will take its first students in 2001," the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp announced in today’s budget.

"This new Commonwealth funding of $6.4 million for the medical school over 2000-2001 to 2002-2003 honours an election commitment announced in The Best of Health – A Balanced Plan for a Stronger Australia."

The measure is being supported by a $10 million allocation from the Health portfolio for capital works, and is conditional on matched funding being provided by the Queensland Government.

"I am pleased to announce that the new medical school will increase the proportion of rural and remote students studying medicine. In each year’s intake, five places will be earmarked for Indigenous students and 15 for students from rural and remote areas," said Dr Kemp.

A medical school in Townsville will also improve health services to the local community as students undertake their clinical training in the area.

20 of the 60 places will be new places allocated to James Cook University, while the remaining 40 places will be transferred from existing medical schools. Institutions which release medical places will, subject to negotiation, be able to reallocate funding to other priorities in their institutions.

As part of its commitment to support access to higher education, particularly among students from far North Queensland, the Government has also provided $21.6 million over four years for an additional 450 student places from 1999 at James Cook University.

"This initiative honours the Government’s election commitment to support access to higher education for students from rural and isolated areas," said Dr Kemp.
