Media ReleaseTASMANIAN SCHOOLS RECEIVE NATIONAL AWARDS
K7709 1 September 1999
"The announcement today of the Tasmanian winners of the National Literacy Week Awards for Literacy and Numeracy Achievement previews the national ceremony on September 7 when all the major award winners will be announced," Dr David Kemp, the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, said today. The Commonwealth is providing a total of 70 awards for primary schools across Australia. Ten Commonwealth funded major awards valued at $10,000 each and 60 awards of $1,000 each, will recognise and reward schools that have added significantly to students literacy and numeracy performance. "I congratulate the five Tasmanian government and non-government schools announced in the Tasmanian section of the awards. They have all shown commendable achievements in literacy and numeracy, delivering excellent outcomes for their students," said Dr Kemp. "Perhaps most impressive is that the five winning Tasmanian schools cater for a high proportion of students who are educationally disadvantaged due to their socio-economic background or geographical location. "Situated in diverse localities from the suburbs of Hobart to isolated rural areas these schools have matched their literacy and numeracy programmes with the varied and different needs of their students to achieve outstanding results," said Dr Kemp. Of the five Tasmanian schools, one receives a major Commonwealth funded award of $10,000. In Tasmania this prize was awarded to Smithton Primary School, Smithton. The Australia-wide list of Commonwealth major award winners will be announced by Dr Kemp at a ceremony in Melbourne on 7 September 1999. The other award-winning schools announced by the Governor of Tasmania, Sir Guy Green, today are: Franklin Primary School, Franklin; Herdsmans Cove Primary School, Gagebrook; Sheffield District High School, Sheffield; and St Aloysius School, Kingston Beach.
