$2.5 MILLION FOR INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH AWARDS AND FELLOWSHIPS

The Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp, today announced funding of $2.5 million for the International Researcher Exchange Scheme (IREX) for 2000. "The IREX Scheme builds international research links by assisting Australian researchers to work overseas and by bringing researchers from other countries to Australia," said Dr Kemp. The 89 Awards announced today will support collaborative partnerships with researchers in 23 overseas countries as diverse as the Peoples Republic of China, the United States, Israel, Mexico, Hungary and India. Funding will also be provided for 19 International Fellowships involving researchers from Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Korea. "Competition for Fellowships and Awards has been strong, with 243 applications received. This represents an increase in applications of 223% over last year," said Dr Kemp. The value of the average Fellowship in 2000will be $64,440, while Awards will average $14,310. Awards range in value from $2,600 to $50,000. "Developing quality research links between Australian universities and leading universities overseas is an important factor in improving the flow of knowledge to Australia," said Dr Kemp. "Federal Government funds for these prestigious Awards and Fellowships is a further demonstration of our commitment to encouraging and ensuring high quality research in Australian universities. "This Scheme also provides terrific value for each Australian dollar spent as contributions are matched by the overseas collaborators." A complete list of the proposals funded is attached.
