NORTHERN TERRITORY SCHOOLS RECEIVE NATIONAL LITERACY AWARDS

K8309 NT 7 September 1999

The winners of the inaugural National Literacy Week Awards for Literacy and Numeracy Achievement were today announced by the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp at a special national presentation ceremony in Melbourne.

Four Northern Territory schools received awards, with Millner Primary School winning a major award of $10,000.

The Commonwealth provided a total of 70 awards for primary schools across Australia. Ten major awards valued at $10,000 each and 60 awards of $1,000 each, recognise and reward schools that have been able to demonstrate measurable improvement of students’ literacy and numeracy performance.

"I congratulate the four Northern Territory schools announced in the Northern Territory section of the awards. They have all shown commendable achievements in literacy and numeracy, delivering excellent outcomes for their students," said Dr Kemp.

"Perhaps most impressive is that the winning four Northern Territory schools cater for a high proportion of educationally disadvantaged students who are Indigenous or have English as a second language.

"Situated in diverse localities – from the suburbs of Darwin to rural areas – they have all matched their literacy and numeracy programmes with the varied and different needs of their students to achieve outstanding results," said Dr Kemp.

Millner Primary School received a major Commonwealth funded award of $10,000. The other award-winning schools announced today are: Batchelor Area School, Batchelor; Humpty Doo Primary School, Humpty Doo; and Leanyer Primary School, Sanderson.
