SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS RECEIVE NATIONAL LITERACY AWARDSK8309 SA 7 September 1999
The winners of the inaugural National Literacy Week Awards for Literacy and Numeracy Achievement were today announced by the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp at a special national presentation ceremony held in Melbourne. Seven South Australian schools received awards, with OSullivan Beach Primary School winning a major award of $10,000. The Commonwealth provided a total of 70 awards for primary schools across Australia. Ten major awards valued at $10,000 each and 60 awards of $1,000 each, recognise and reward schools that have added significantly to students literacy and numeracy performance. "I congratulate the seven South Australian schools announced in the South Australian section of the awards. They have all shown commendable achievements in literacy and numeracy, delivering excellent outcomes for their students," said Dr Kemp. "These winning South Australian schools cater for students from widely varied social, cultural and language backgrounds. Located in different areas - from the remote far north of the State to the southern suburbs of Adelaide they have all matched their literacy and numeracy programmes with the varied and different needs of their students to achieve outstanding results," said Dr Kemp. The other award-winning schools who were presented with $1,000 awards announced today are: Amata Anangu School, via Alice Springs; Coober Pedy Area School, Coober Pedy; Para Hills East Primary School, Para Hills; Pedare Christian School Primary Campus, Golden Grove; Salisbury North West Schools, Salisbury North; and The Hills Montessori School, Algate.
