K8309 WA 7 September 1999

The winners of the inaugural National Literacy Week Awards for Literacy and Numeracy Achievement were announced at a special national presentation ceremony held in Melbourne today by the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp.

Nine Western Australian schools received awards, with Forest Crescent Primary School and Kururrungku Catholic Education Centre winning major awards of $10,000 each.

The Commonwealth provided a total of 70 awards for primary schools across Australia. Ten major awards valued at $10,000 each and 60 awards of $1,000 each, recognise and reward schools that have been able to demonstrate visible improvement of students’ literacy and numeracy performance.

"I congratulate the nine Western Australian schools announced in the Western Australian section of the awards. They have all shown commendable achievements in literacy and numeracy, delivering excellent outcomes for their students," said Dr Kemp.

"Perhaps most impressive is that the winning Western Australian schools cater for students from widely varied social, cultural and language backgrounds. Located in different areas – from the remote East Kimberley region to the suburbs of Perth – they have all matched their literacy and numeracy programmes with the many different needs of their students to achieve outstanding results," said Dr Kemp.
