Dr Kemp sees double at INDUSTRY OPENING

K8609 13 September 1999

The shopfront extension of an Australian owned small business was officially opened in Queensland today by the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp.

The Brisbane Display and Shopfitting business is owned and operated by Dr Kemp’s namesake, Mr David Kemp, who operates the only firm of its kind in Queensland integrating all aspects of the manufacturing processes on the premises.

Mr Kemp employs around 85 staff and all are trained ‘in-house’ through group training arrangements which allows employees to learn new skills using specialised and technology advanced equipment.

At present Mr Kemp supplies major retailers and Australian business with his products and plans to expand the Australian operations to overseas markets.

In his opening speech to the large industry audience, Dr Kemp said that we must look toward the future and ensure that the nation’s workforce is fully skilled as we prepare for the new millennium.

"We know that a skilled workforce means that industries are able to compete more effectively on quality and variety of products. As a result industries can enter more sophisticated and high value product and export markets – something that is critical to Australia’s future," Dr Kemp said.

"Employers now have greater choice in how, when and where training is provided and there are new opportunities in part-time and school based New Apprenticeships," Dr Kemp said.

"The Government’s New Apprenticeship scheme is an outstanding success with a record 232,000 New Apprentices in training nationally.

"This Government is continuing its support for vocational education and training by providing financial incentives to employers and funding for the development of National Industry Training Packages.

"Through its support for New Apprenticeships, the Government is facilitating the development of a National Vocational Education and Training System, which is responsive to the needs of industry," Dr Kemp said.
