NSW MANUFACTURING TO HAVE A COMPETITIVE EDGE WITH STATE OF THE ART TRAINING FACILITIES

Australia’s largest ever Skill Centre has been approved for development in NSW for NASTEC Solutions for an Integrated Manufacturing Training Centre, with $4million of Commonwealth funding.

A new specialist high-tech skill centre to train people for the manufacturing industry is to be established at the Australian Technology Park in Sydney, thanks to a $4million Commonwealth funding package.

The Commonwealth Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp, and the State Minister for Education and Training, Mr John Aquilina today jointly announced more than $4 million in funding for a skill centre in the central Sydney suburb of Redfern at the Australian Technology Park.

The Australian Technology Park has been established for state of the art research and technology companies in what were the old Sydney railway sheds.

"This new facility will provide more alternative training opportunities for people planning a career in the manufacturing industry," Dr Kemp said.

The Integrated Manufacturing Training Centre will enable students to be trained in state of the art manufacturing processes, using computer aided drafting(CAD), computer aided manufacturing (CAM) and computer aided engineering (CAE) packages. The training will be closely attuned to accommodate the diverse range of needs in the manufacturing industry, from entry level to highly specialised technology and management levels.

The manufacturing industry in particular Unigraphics Solutions has matched the Commonwealth’s investment in the centre.

Work is expected to start immediately and be completed by December 1999.

Dr Kemp said the project represented the benefits of government and industry working together to invest in the skills of Australia’s new and existing workers.

The industry skills centre program has provided $28 million to expand or establish 80 skill centres over the past 4 years.
