Australian universities will receive $26.9 million for research projects under the Australian Research Council Small Grants Scheme, Minister for Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Senator Amanda Vanstone, announced today.
Australian Capital Territory universities will receive $1.24 million. Each institution will receive a base amount plus an additional amount determined by their success over the previous two years in attracting ARC Large Grants.
"The Small Grants System gives researchers an incentive to seek funding in the open competition of the Large Grants Scheme," Senator Vanstone said, "as this generates further funds for their institution under the Small Grants Scheme.
"Receiving research funding in this way gives the universities substantial autonomy in deciding the direction of their research activities, and enables them to determine the outcome of research applications on the basis of local knowledge of the applicants and their projects."
Institutions have already called for applications for grants in 1997. Announcement of the actual allocations will enable each institution to make final decisions on recommendations for grants and the level of funding for each.
