SYDNEY MORNING HERALD GETS IT WRONG
V181/97 13 September 1997 Paul Cleary in todays Sydney Morning Herald alleges that I am in conflict with the Prime Minister on the basis of comments made at a private dinner last Thursday night. I have not only been quoted out of context, but have had words put in my mouth that were never there. I am alleged to have said that Budget forecasts would not be met. I made no comment whatsoever in relation to Budget forecasts. For the record, I believe that the Budget forecasts will be met. The second point on which Mr Cleary is wrong is job security. In answer to a question, I referred to the OECDs Jobs Strategy. The Jobs Strategy outlines ten policy areas which require action to reduce unemployment. These include getting the economic fundamentals right, a more flexible industrial relations system, and reform of employment security provisions. When speaking about reform of employment security provisions I was referring to the reform of unfair dismissal laws this Government has already undertaken. Better unfair dismissal laws encourage business to employ more workers. This is one of this Governments core reforms. There is no conflict between myself and the Prime Minister.
