Table 35 sets out the numbers of staff at 30 June 2000 by gender, classification and level. It also provides a comparison with 30 June 1999 figures.

Staff numbers have increased slightly in all areas, except for the Secretary and Statutory Office Holders. The total rise in staff numbers is 3.9 per cent .

Please note that people who are performing higher duties are counted in their higher duties rather than their substantive classification level. Inoperative staff (for example, staff on leave without pay) are counted in the figures.

The department’s classification structure translates to the public service classification structure as follows:

• DETYA Level 3-Australian Public Service Level 6
• DETYA Level 2-Australian Public Service Levels 4-5
• DETYA Level 1-Australian Public Service Levels 1-2-3
