  Discretionary Grants

Contents | Previous | Next

Discretionary grants are payments where the Portfolio Minister or paying agency has a discretion in determining whether or not a particular applicant receives funding and may or may not impose conditions in return for the grant. The payment can be made to an organisation or individual and includes ad hoc grants that are made on a one-off basis, as well as grants renewed under continuing programmes.

The definition of discretionary grants excludes the following:

  • grants directly associated with the provision of government services via contracting out arrangements;
  • payments to States and territories and other Government agencies;
  • payments to overseas aid organisations;
  • Government income support programmes;
  • programmes specifically for indigenous peoples;
  • emergency payment programmes;
  • grants under commercial industry development programmes (including to increase research and development and assist exporters); and
  • grant programmes specifically for educational institutions and medical research institutions.

The following table lists the discretionary grant programmes administered by this Department and provides contact telephone numbers if further information is required.

The definition of discretionary grants has been altered as a result of a recent review by the Department of Finance and Administration. We are reviewing all grants against the revised definition for the 2000-2001 financial year. Any changes to the current list will be published in the 2000-2001 Annual Report.
