Budget 1999-2000FACT SHEET AUSTRALIAS ENVIRONMENT BENEFITS FROM AN INCREASE IN GREEN CORPS PLACESGreen Corps in brief The Green Corps programme provides young people aged 17-20 with a full-time training position for six months on community-based environmental projects located mainly in rural and remote areas. Green Corps projects include land care, eco-tourism and restoration activities and survey and data collection work. Eligibility for Green Corps Participation in Green Corps is voluntary and there is strong competition for places. All young Australians between the ages of 17-20 are eligible to apply. There is no requirement to be registered with Centrelink or to be unemployed. Selection is by an agreed set of criteria including a commitment to improving the environment. Management of Green Corps The Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) manages the programme and consults with Environment Australia on programme guidelines. Tenders for the management of the programme are currently under review. The successful tenderer will be responsible for organising and implementing Green Corps projects, recruiting participants and providing field support. Difference between Green Corps and the Work for the Dole programme The Green Corps programme is not a labour market programme, and is not a replacement for the Work for the Dole programme. Green Corps enables young people to access high quality training and has a strong focus on quality environmental outcomes. While providing an important opportunity for young people to contribute to the environment, Green Corps also aims to meet the Governments environmental priorities for the Natural Heritage Trust. Number of Green Corps places Almost $90 million has been allocated to continue the Green Corps programme for the next four financial years. This will provide at least 1,700 Green Corps placements for each of these years. About 300 of these places will be available annually for mutual obligation clients. Selection for placement is through interview and is based on merit, although so far about 50 per cent of participants were previously unemployed. Location of Green Corps projects Green Corps projects are mainly located in rural and remote areas of Australia in areas where environmental conservation work is a high priority. Payment to Green Corps participants Green Corps participants are paid a training allowance based on the Level C of the Federal National Training Wage (NTW) Award structure. Allowances range from $161 - $269 a week reflecting the highest level of secondary schooling the young person has completed and the time since leaving school. Information about Green Corps projects and applying for them Information about Green Corps projects is advertised widely in the national print media
