Budget 1999-2000FACT SHEET OFFSHORE CENTRES AWARDED $5 MILLION EACH TO PROMOTE AUSTRALIAN STUDIESSir Robert Menzies Centre for Australian Studies, University of London, and the Centre for Australian and New Zealand Studies, Georgetown University Two Australian studies centres, the Sir Robert Menzies Centre for Australian Studies, University of London, and the Centre for Australian and New Zealand Studies, Georgetown University, Washington DC, have both been granted endowments of $5m in the 1999-2000 Budget. The endowments continue the Australian Governments commitment to the activities of the centres in the advancement of Australian learning and culture. They will allow the centres to plan the expansion of their activities into the next millennium. Aim of the centres The Menzies Centre was established in 1982 and the Georgetown Centre in 1996. Located in two of the worlds most important capital cities, the centres will reinforce the efforts of the Australian Government to advance national interests overseas. The centres help Australian institutions to participate in the global development of knowledge and skills; raise levels of interest and excellence in Australian studies overseas; assist in the recognition of Australia as a world class contributor to education training and research; promote Australias cultural, economic and social achievements; and strengthen government-to-government links. Activities of the centres The endowments will continue to support the centres promotion of Australian studies and linkages through activities such as guest lectures by eminent Australians, academic and student exchanges, discussion forums, conferences, seminars and public lectures, and teaching courses and publishing papers on Australian studies. This funding will also help the Centres to further develop special activities planned to coincide with the celebration of the Centenary of Federation. |
