Budget 1999-2000

FACT SHEET

$77.7 MILLION FOR TEACHERS’ PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • The Quality Teacher Programme is a three year, $77.7 million Federal Government initiative which will strengthen the skills of the teaching profession.
  • The Programme will focus on the renewal of teacher skills and understanding in literacy, numeracy, mathematics, science, information technology and vocational education in schools. It will target the seventy percent of teachers who completed formal training ten or more years ago and casual teachers and teachers who are re-entering the teaching profession.
  • It will supplement professional development already being undertaken by State and Territory government and non-government education authorities and professional associations.
  • Funding will support the provision of targeted professional development programmes by government and non-government education authorities and organisations such as professional associations or consortiums of education providers, such as schools or clusters of schools. A small proportion of the funds will be retained to support strategic national projects.
  • The Programme will be developed in consultation with key stakeholders during the remainder of 1999.
  • Programme activities will commence in early 2000.
