On the surface people think that we have done a lot of work but I think what it is more than anything is that we target one thing but as we work through that problem it opens up a whole lot of other issues. So we seem to be in this corridor and we are just getting more doors opening and saying 'look at this area and that area'. It is definitely raising awareness and that is really quite wonderful.
This is the way a teacher in the study described her school's work in gender equity. In terms of the current project, the corridor analogy is appropriate for the the many different ways in which schools in this study tapped into the knowledge of teachers, students and parents. They show how data gathering need not be complex or impose a major burden on schools but can often be part of, or modifications of, regular school activities. The strategies are presented as a trigger for further ideas and provide models which might be adapted to meet the needs of particular schools.
