Whose Knowledge?

This section looks at the various sources of information that are available to schools on gender issues. A major thrust of this section is that the more perspectives that are tapped, the more complete is the school's knowledge base and the better it will understand the context within which action is planned. Examples from the current study are used throughout.

When it comes to knowing about gender, everyone knows; everyone has experience of gender. Apart from the way school may be organised on a gender basis, teachers and students have a store of out-of-school gender experiences which they bring to bear on their school life. It is important that any gender equity needs analysis takes cognisance of the different accounts of gender. In a similar way, the gender experiences and understandings of parents needs to be considered.
