The previous sections of this introduction summarised the kinds of benefits to regional communities and universities that might occur through their greater engagement. These outcomes will only eventuate however after informed negotiation between key university and regional stakeholders. The data provided in this atlas is designed as a tool to assist communities begin the process of exploring their higher education needs and to stimulate initial discussion with their higher education institution about possible strategic directions
The data in this publication have been collated from a number of sources. It is not meant to be an exhaustive coverage to meet every region's particular circumstance, as this would require a publication of mammoth proportions. What has been provided is a base level of coverage, which would be relevant to the kinds of analysis all regions would want to initially carry out. The information provided here and published at postcode level on the DETYA website can be supplemented by information from other sources. In particular, the Integrated Regional Database (IRDB) maintained by the Australian Bureau of Statistics is a rich source of information at the postcode or statistical local area (SLA) level. The IRDB contains data on:
