Departmental policy and issues

The Department of Education, Science and Training is involved with a wide range of policy and issues relating to the following areas:

 


Current policy and issues relating to school education include the Australian Technical Colleges, further investment in school education in Australia, financial assistance for reading tuition and flagpoles for schools.

Current policy and issues relating to career development include career guidance, employability skills, skills shortages, career education quality, vocational education in schools, and goals for schooling.
Current policy and issues relating to training and skills include language, literacy and numeracy; training and skills at school; skills shortages; and the Backing Australia's Ability package.

Current policy and issues relating to higher education include assuring quality, learning and teaching, rationalising responsibility for higher education, and reforms through the Our Universities: Backing Australia's Future package.

Current policy and issues relating to research include research quality, national research priorities, commercialisation, the infrastructure of national collaborative research, and the Backing Australia's Abillity package.

Current policy and issues relating to international education include additional promotion and presence in overseas markets, quality assurance in onshore and offshore higher education, scholarships for high achieving students, international centres for excellence, a national centre for language training and the annual registration charge.

The provision of education and training services to overseas students in Australia is regulated by the Department of Education, Science and  Training through the Education Services for Overseas Students Act (ESOS) and associated legislation.

Current policy and issues relating to indigenous education include the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy, and further improving educational outcomes for Indigenous people.
Current policy and issues relating to science and innovation include international science linkages, the national research priorities, radioactive waste management, marine science, the framework for research quality, science and innovation awareness and analysis, commercialisation and the Backing Australia's Ability package.
