The Department of Education, Science and Training funds, in whole or in part, a wide range of programmes in the following areas:


Current programmes and funding relating to school education cover operating and capital grants, civics and citzenship, languages, literacy and numeracy, quality teaching, awards and prizes, safe schools, special needs and disadvantage and vocational education.
Current programmes and funding relating to career education cover career development information and resources, enterprise learning, transition initiatives for young and/or Indigenous Australians, career programmes and initiatives, and vocational education.
Current programmes and funding relating to training and skills cover language, literacy, numeracy, job pathways, skills shortages, group training, industry training strategies, New Apprenticeships (and related programs) and the Disability Coordination Officer Programme.
Current programmes and funding related to higher education cover assuring quality, learning and teaching, rationalising responsibility and the Our Universities: Backing Australia's Future higher education reforms.
Current programmes and funding relating to research cover collaboration, international science linkages, Cooperative Research Centres, science awareness, Questacon Smart Moves, infrastructure, training, learned academies, grants and major national research facilities.
Current programmes and funding relating to international education cover the Australian Education International (AEI) and Study in Australia websites, promotional materials and services, AEI overseas offices, offshore support and advisory services, publications, events, qualifications recognition assessment services and administration of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act.
Current programmes and funding relating to Indigenous education cover support for community organisations, support for education providers and staff, support for school leavers and students, increasing vocational learning opportunties, and the Dare to Lead and What Works websites.
Current programmes and funding relating to science and innovation cover collaboration, international science linkages, Cooperative Research Centres, science and innovation awareness, Questacon Smart Moves and major national research facilities.
