Types of Work

DEST offers a real chance for economists to apply their skills and knowledge to real world issues. This includes assisting with the design and implementation of social and/or econometric research projects. Economists are employed in a number of areas across the Department especially in Research, Analysis and Evaluation Group and in Higher Education Group. Graduate Economists take part in analysis, evaluation, research, policy development and briefing on a number of important issues including:

  • education and training equity issues;
  • programme evaluations dealing with schools and higher education; and
  • income support and incentives in education, training and social policy.
  • During their first year, graduates undertake work rotations to different areas in the Department, giving them the opportunity to experience working on diverse issues.

    Qualities We Seek

    To be successful in obtaining a position as a graduate economist with DEST, you will need to have:

  • appropriate academic qualifications in economics or a related discipline, preferably at an Honours standard;
  • high level analytical, research and evaluation skills;
  • sound written and oral communication skills;
  • an ability to work as a member of a team;
  • interest and motivation in working in DEST; and
  • an ability to show initiative, creativity and be innovative in your approach to work.
