AUSTRALIA-EUROPE SCHOLARSHIPS

Description and number available

The Australia-Europe Scholarships aim to strengthen Australia’s education and research relationships with countries in Europe.  The designated countries are France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Greece (two scholarships each), Croatia/Slovenia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland and Switzerland (one each).

The scholarships enable scholars to undertake postgraduate study or research in target disciplines judged to be of benefit to both the individual and the relationship between Australia and the countries in which they are offered.  They are one of the many initiatives taken by the Australian Government to provide such persons with the opportunity to pursue programmes in Australia and to raise international awareness of Australian expertise.

Benefits

The scholarships are tenable for a maximum of 12 months.  Benefits include a stipend, a settling in allowance, a materials allowance, one international economy class return airfare by the most direct route between the designated country and Australia, related travel insurance, reasonable domestic travel costs, for conferences or other research activities in the approved programme; visa and any related medical examination costs, enrolment, course and tuition fees for approved study (paid directly to the Host Institution); and basic health insurance costs while in Australia.

The stipend and allowances are designed to cover all additional costs not listed above, including books, equipment, field work and the production of reports.  Scholarship holders will be expected to meet these costs, as they arise, from the stipends and allowances.  The scholarships provide no financial support for spouses or other dependants.  Scholarship benefits are subject to periodic review, as are designated countries and numbers of awards.

Eligibility

Candidates must be citizens and permanent residents of the designated countries and should be physically resident in those countries at the time of applying.  They should demonstrate academic excellence and should have completed a degree, or equivalent.

Study programmes can either contribute to a formal course (Masters or Ph.D) in which the scholar is enrolled (university or higher education institution) in the designated country, and intends to complete; or to the development of specific knowledge and skills which will assist the scholar on return.

The study programmes should promote enduring links between Australian education and training institutions and those in the designated countries, or otherwise enhance the bilateral relationship.  Study or research to be undertaken is not for the award of an Australian degree.

Candidates must demonstrate fluency in spoken and written English.  In the case of candidates from non-English speaking countries, this must be evidenced by a score on an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) of at least 6.5, or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 580, or another such recognised test of English language ability accepted by DEST for this purpose.

Awards for overseas scholars to study in Australia

Australia-Asia Awards

The Australia-Asia Awards are prestigious awards for citizens of designated Asian countries to undertake professional programmes of study, training or research for up to 36 months in Australia. The Awards aim to strengthen Australia’s relationships with its bilateral partners in Asia. They enable leading scholars and professionals from designated countries to undertake training, study or research programmes judged to be of benefit to both the individual and the relationship with Australia.

Each award is funded to a value of A$50,000 per annum, plus the cost of an airfare from the home country to Australia and return.

Commencing in 2003, 10 awards (one per country) will be offered annually to applicants from China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. By 2005, it is expected that there will be up to 30 award holders, i.e., approximately 3 for each of these countries will be studying in Australia.

Benefits

Benefits include a fortnightly stipend and any other allowances specified by DEST, materials to support an award holder’s programme of study, tuition, course, training and conference fees and associated costs, visa and related expenses, and examinations for visa, health, and/or travel insurance purposes. An establishment allowance will be paid at the commencement of the award.

One-off benefits include an economy class air fare from the home country, and within Australia to the host institution and return to the home country, taxes and levies associated with the air travel, and travel insurance.

The awards do not provide financial or other support for spouses or other dependants.

Eligibility

Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the country where the award is offered and should be physically resident in that country at the time of application. They should have a record of high-level academic and/or professional achievement in their chosen field of study, which should be relevant to nominated priority areas of study/research, as may be identified by DEST from time to time. Applicants should demonstrate a potential to participate at a high level in the academic or wider community in their home country on return from Australia.

Applicants should demonstrate fluency in spoken and written English, sufficient to meet minimum Australian visa requirements and the English language competency standard required by Australian host institution for the course of study to be undertaken by the applicant. English fluency is necessary to ensure a successful outcome in a high level academic environment. It may be demonstrated by an IELTS score of 6.5, or an equivalent score demonstrated by other methods when assessing competency in written and oral English. The applicant should have achieved this score no longer than 2 years prior to the time of application.
