Postscript
Whilst this project focused on Indigenous Education Workers in one rural and
remote Indigenous community, we have undertaken similar but shorter training
sessions with IEWs in other remote regional and rural indigenous communities.
These training sessions have focused on how to teach number fact strategies,
measurement concepts and processes, and fractions. In all instances, we have
met with a similar joy in learning, whole-hearted participation in the training
and trialling (when available), and a sense of pride in being “taken seriously”
by the school administrators and the teachers they support.
One IEW said, “They told us at school that black kids were dumb and couldn’t
do maths.” We have found that this is untrue.
