Media CentreMedia ReleaseStrengthening Indigenous Communities - Community Festivals for Drug Prevention and Education9 May 2006 BUD 13/06 More than 30,000 school students across Australia will benefit annually from an Australian Government 2006-07 Budget initiative that aims to tackle key lifestyle issues facing our nation’s youth. The Community Festivals for Education Engagement and Drug Prevention programme has been allocated $16.1 million in funding over the next four years, commencing in the 2006-07 financial year. The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, said that the festivals will be used to promote healthy, positive lifestyles for young people, leading to improved participation in education and training. Schools and communities in remote and regional areas will have the opportunity to participate in community-based music, dance, art and career activities designed for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people. "Improving the educational outcomes of students through school and community engagement is important, particularly for those disadvantaged by location," Minister Bishop said. "Positive events such as these provide an important mechanism for increasing community involvement in building the resilience of young people." The Community Festivals will also include a number of Indigenous-focussed events which will be used to promote student wellbeing and improved school attendance. "Our aim is to connect young Indigenous people with some of the many inspirational role models in their communities and to encourage high expectations of their ability to achieve," Minister Bishop said. "This is a positive way to encourage them to achieve educational success, and to build their self esteem and aspirations for the future."
