Media CentreMedia ReleaseRecord science and innovation expenditure in the 2007-08 Budget
The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, said today that funding for science and innovation has increased to a total of $6.5 billion in 2007-08, the highest amount ever spent by any Australian Government on science and innovation programmes. The record level of funding for science and innovation is a result of the combination of additional government initiatives, including new measures in the Budget, on top of the significant investment in the sector from the 7-year, $5.3 billion commitment the Government made in 2004 through the Backing Australia’s Ability – Building our Future Through Science and Innovation package. The Government has also made a further $435.8 million investment in the current financial year in medical research infrastructure projects and $50 million in support for the Australian Synchrotron. "The Australian Government is continuing to deliver on its commitment to build a prosperous Australia through a large and sustained investment in this country’s scientific research, knowledge base and innovation capacity," Minister Bishop said. "Given our commitment to fiscal responsibility, the funding boost revealed in this Budget confirms science and innovation as a high priority for the Government, which will result in significant economic, environmental and social benefits." Details of the Government’s expenditure are provided in the
