Media Centre$52 MILLION TO GET A HAND UP IN THE TRADES10 May 2005 MINBUD 09/05 Over the next four years, the Australian Government will provide an additional $51.6 million to increase support to those who wish to take up a New Apprenticeship in the trades, but who require some additional assistance to be "job ready". Minister for Vocational and Technical Education, Gary Hardgrave, said the investment makes an extra 5,000 places available each year under the New Apprenticeships Access Programme which provides pre-vocational training, support and assistance to help job seekers secure a New Apprenticeship. The new places will target industries and regions experiencing skills needs. Priority for the additional places will be given to job seekers who have successfully participated in the Work for the Dole programme or are receiving intensive support from the Job Network. "Many people want to get into a New Apprenticeship – but, for a range of reasons, are not quite ready," Mr Hardgrave said. "To be job ready some people need assistance with employability skills such as communication and teamwork, others need greater self-confidence before they can get started on full-time work and training. "The New Apprenticeships Access Programme training and support is industry specific and tailored to the needs of the job seeker. The Australian Government already provides $10.6 million a year, to assist more than 4,500 people." The Australian Government has invited tenders from organisations to manage the provision of New Apprenticeships Access Programme services across metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas of Australia. The tender closes on 20 May 2005.
