$5.8 MILLION EXTENDS RESIDENTIAL SUPPORT FOR NEW APPRENTICES

10 May 2005 MINBUD 12/05

Minister for Vocational and Technical Education, Gary Hardgrave, today said the Australian Government will spend $5.8 million over four years to extend the Living Away from Home Allowance to third year New Apprentices, benefiting almost 3,000 New Apprentices annually.

Mr Hardgrave said under this first ever extension of the allowance to third year New Apprentices, eligible New Apprentices will receive $25 a week from 1 July 2005.

"New Apprentices at the outset of their career face a number of upfront costs, such as buying materials, tools, uniforms or safety equipment," Mr Hardgrave said.

"On top of these costs, many need to move from their home to take up or remain in their New Apprenticeship.

"The Howard Government recognises that moving and living away from home can be an expensive exercise and we will therefore in 2005-06 invest $17.8 million in the Living Away from Home Allowance for 7,600 New Apprentices in their first, second and third years.

"Today’s announcement to extend the allowance will help third year New Apprentices, predominantly from rural and regional Australia, cover their living costs and continue in their New Apprenticeships."

New Apprentices who move away from their family home to take up or remain in a New Apprenticeship are provided with an allowance to assist them with the cost of living away from home for the first two years of their New Apprenticeship. At present they are paid $77.17 per week in the first year and $38.59 per week in the second year.

"This initiative is part of an extensive suite of measures to encourage more Australians into New Apprenticeships, particularly into those trades experiencing skills needs," Mr Hardgrave said.
